Hailuoto
Hailuoto is a picturesque island, the largest on Bothnian Bay at about 200
square kilometres. 50 kilometres from Oulu and with around a thousand
permanent residents, it's connected to the mainland by a ferry - the ride
takes about 25 minutes - and, for part of the year, by a road over the
frozen ice.
Hailuoto has six hundred private summer cottages and is popular as a
recreational destination. The locals arrange skiing, fishing, and boating
events, and the island has several restaurants.
